Fifty Year Itch:2001, oil on canvas, 30 x 30 cm. 2021

The central element of the solo showing at Derby (see yesterday’s entry) was a group of six large paintings titled the Shaving Air series…this picture is a version of the fourth in the set. I decided to punch up the colour somewhat as this is a painting about a painting and divorced from the original context. All six were based on sketchbook ideas made on the research trip to Porthleven with John France and the student group  back in January 1999.  This was a difficult year punctuated by the death of my first wife in the middle of it.  The impact of that was combined with fresh challenges at Derby where a re-organisation saw me responsible for not only Art & Design but also the Engineering and Humanities…not the best of mixes (although easier than the original proposal for Art & Design and Health?).  Despite (and, in part, maybe because of) these I actually managed more work not less, finding some solace in painting and preparing for the show at the Museum in 2002.
